Saint Michael carries this title from the Church's own prayer against evil, composed by Pope Leo XIII: "Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle." As leader of the heavenly host, his strength cast Lucifer from Heaven, and that same strength stands against evil still.
The front carries his emblem, a winged shield marked with the cross, beneath the words Defend Us in Battle. The back carries a full illustration of Saint Michael casting down the devil, a reminder of his protection, worn close.
